Romeo and Juliet vs HMS

There are many differences and similarities between HMS women and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. The first similarity is the presence of the machismo attitude in the books. In RJ, Juliet is controlled by her father. When Juliet tries to cancel the wedding of her and paris, Capulet goes into a rage and threatens to throw her out as if she has no choice but to chose the path laid out for her by her father. In HMS, Esperanza's grandmother is basically taken hostage by Esperanza's grandfather when he throws a sack over her head and carries her off. Both of these examples prominently describe the machismo attitude.  Another similarity is that both Juliet and Esperanza mature during the course of the book. In the beginning of RJ, Juliet is an obedient little girl that follows her parents commands but turns into a girl who fakes her death in order to run off with a boy she knew for a few days. In HMS, Esperanza starts off a little girl who wont even talk to her brothers outside of the house and turns into a girl who saves he relatives from the horrors of Mango Street. The differences are that of love and wealth. In RJ, Juliet finds the perfect boy while in HMS, Esperanza never finds a boy that she could live with. Also in RJ, Juliet has a lot of money in her family while in HMS the women are poor which also feeds the machismo because the people with jobs were the men so they were the ones who controlled the money. These are all similarities between the women in House on Mango Street and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet.
